Swim Meet Volunteer Positions
Running a successful swim meet requires swimmers, coaches, a pool, and LOTS and LOTS of volunteers. If you are a seasoned swim parent, you probably have a pretty good idea of what volunteer jobs you feel comfortable signing up to do. For new swim parents, this can be a totally overwhelming and scary experience. Please don’t be scared to jump in and help! We will willingly teach anyone without experience or someone that wants to try a new volunteer position.
**Remember, each family is required to volunteer a minimum of 4 shifts each season. Each meet is divided into 2 shifts: first half and second half. So plan ahead and get those shifts in early, if you are able!**
Listed below is a brief description of the volunteer positions that need to be filled for every meet. None of the jobs are particularly difficult and simple training is provided as needed; however, some of the positions do require attending special training sessions and some positions are better suited for our more experienced swim parents (Starter and Head Timer, for example). If you are brand new, the jobs of timer, runner, bull pen, and concessions are great places to start!
ANNOUNCER: Announces first, second, and final calls for each event. Works closely with the starter to keep the meet running smoothly. The announcer will need to anticipate meet flow based on the number of swimmers, the stroke, the number of lengths to be swim, and the age of the swimmers. Training is REQUIRED for this position!
HEAD TIMER: Organizes and briefs the lane timers on their duties prior to the meet and is in charge of the lane timers throughout the meet. The head timer starts multiple stopwatches at the beginning of each race, in case a lane timer does not get their stopwatch started on time.
LANE TIMERS: Record the swimmer’s time. Each timer is provided a stopwatch and assigned a lane; there are three timers for each lane. All three times are recorded and the middle time becomes the “official” time. Timers are assigned to work for one half of the meet. This job gives you the best view of the pool and the swimmers during their races.
RUNNER: Responsible for obtaining the completed time sheets and DQ forms for each race from the timers and judges. The time sheets and DQ forms are delivered to the scoring table. The job title fits this role perfectly. Runners should have supportive shoes as they will definitely be getting their steps in! Assigned to work for one half of the meet. This job keeps you moving around at the poolside and the time passes quickly!
